The plastic materials used to produce the disks and packaging are not sustainable. An article from by bigfishgame.com states that much of the plastic waste from electronic games and consoles end up in landfills. The plastic materials do not break down, and end up polluting the soil and oceans.
But not only is plastic waste a problem. An article by polygon.com notes that it takes a lot of energy to process, transport and distribute the large number of physical video games around the world. This YouTube video from one of Sony’s Disc Manufacturing Plant shows how disk manufacturing is an ongoing never-ending process. An alternative could be to download digital games, but looking further into that option I learned that digital is not always more eco-friendlier.
